The Ministry for Rural Areas and Consumer Protection Baden-Württemberg (MLR) is one of eleven ministries in the administration of the state of Baden-Württemberg . From 1952 to 1953 it was called "Ministry of Agriculture and Food", then "Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forests", from 1966 "Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Viticulture and Forests", from 1972 "Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Environment" , from 1980 "Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Environment and Forests", from 1987 "Ministry of Rural Areas", from 2001 "Ministry of Food and Rural Areas" and from 2010 "Ministry of Rural Areas, Nutrition and Consumer Protection". It has had its current name since 2011.
The agriculture ministers since 1945 can be found in the list of agriculture ministers of Baden-Württemberg .
Business areas
The ministry is responsible for all questions relating to rural areas, agriculture, land consolidation, surveying and geographic information, nutrition, food monitoring, veterinary services and the forest. There are the following business areas:
- Consumer protection (except human medical assessments), nutritional issues and consumer information on nutritional issues;
- Safety of Food of Plant and Animal Origin, Food Control , Chemical and Veterinary Inspection Offices;
- Veterinary and animal welfare , State Veterinary Investigation Office Aulendorf - Diagnostic Center;
- Design and maintenance of the cultural and recreational landscape as the highest agricultural and forestry authority, biotope maintenance and biotope networking in the forest as well as outside of nature conservation and landscape protection areas , extensification and greening of agricultural and forestry areas;
- Nature conservation and landscape conservation (including compensation payments) and biotope and species protection as the highest nature conservation authority, district offices for nature conservation and landscape management, nature conservation fund;
- Land maintenance , land culture, landscape development and planning, agroecology, landscape-related recreation;
- Coordination of planning for rural areas, structural measures for rural areas;
- Agriculture including viticulture and horticulture ; renewable raw materials including energetic use of biomass; Hunting and fishing , rural housekeeping;
- Land consolidation and land development ;
- Surveying and geographic information ;
- Advice, support, professional training and further education, technical schools, research and testing in the agricultural and forestry sector;
- Compensation for agriculture and forestry;
- Plant protection and forest protection, production-related soil protection, fertilization;
- Forestry , forest planning, forest ownership structure;
- Administration of state forest assets, technical supervision of state domains and agricultural free float, agricultural and forestry real estate transactions;
- Agricultural market, technical support for the food industry, securing the supply of food, marketing, promotion of the treatment and processing of agricultural products; Quality checks.
The authority is based in Stuttgart .

- State Institute for Agriculture, Food and Rural Areas based in Schwäbisch Gmünd
- Agricultural Technology Center Augustenberg based in Karlsruhe (originated from the State Institute for Plant Production based in Rheinstetten , the State Institute for Plant Protection based in Stuttgart , the State Agricultural Examination and Research Institute Augustenberg based in Karlsruhe; the State Institute has branch offices at the previous offices)
- State institute for pig breeding based in Boxberg
- Academy for Agriculture and Housekeeping based in Kupferzell
- State teaching and research institute for horticulture based in Heidelberg
