Palast der Republik - Haus des Volkes is a documentary film by the DEFA Studio for Documentaries by Horst Winter from 1976 .

action

Before it comes to the Palast der Republik , several historical documentary recordings of Marx-Engels-Platz are shown, which are intended to prove that it has always been an important place for the German working class . But it also made a name for itself as a place of international solidarity when the final rally of the 10th World Festival of Youth and Students took place there.

On August 13, 1973, construction began on the building in the city center of East Berlin , which was to be used for political consultations, culture, art and socializing after completion. The excavation pit was 180 meters long, 110 meters wide and 12 meters deep. 210 thousand cubic meters of earth had to be excavated and removed. The construction workers were supported by members of the National People's Army and the Soviet Army . In the late autumn of 1973 the foundation began to grow deeper than the Spree . The foundation stone was laid on November 2, 1973, when the young civil engineering worker Klaus Kuchenbäcker listed the contents of the cassette before handing it over to Erich Honecker . The content consisted of a Neues Deutschland and the Berliner Zeitung from May 22, 1973, newspapers from November 2, 1973 and the last week, construction drawings and schedules, and a set of coins. Then the eight sliding cores for the stairs and elevators were erected with a growth rate of 20 cm per hour. Steel workers from all over the GDR then began their work. In order to bring the individual components, some of which weighed over 500 tons , to their intended installation locations, new devices were specially developed. On November 18, 1974, the topping-out crown was placed on the house.

4,700 square meters of white marble had to be laid on the outer wall and thousands of spherical lights were installed. The interior work was progressing quickly, the most modern automatic control and regulation systems for the stage technology, for film, radio and television were installed, which required many specialists. 13 restaurants, in which 1500 seats were available, had to be set up before the test runs could finally begin in all rooms. The head of the construction project, Prof. Dr. Erhardt Gießke and the chief architect Heinz Graffunder took stock and thanked the construction workers before recordings from the completed Palast der Republik were shown to the music of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra at the end of the film
