Palazzo di Giustizia (German: “Justizpalast”, international distribution title: Ordinary Justice , German: “Normal Justice”) is an Italian - Swiss feature film by Chiara Bellosi from 2020 .

The world premiere took place on February 24, 2020 in the Generation14plus section of the 70th Berlin International Film Festival .

action

The film captures everyday life on a large Italian dish. A young man's case is being heard in the courtroom. He is said to have been involved in the robbery of a gas station, in the course of which his accomplice was killed by the gas station attendant. Interrogations take place, evidence is presented, and witnesses appear.

While a complicated murder or manslaughter trial is being negotiated in the hall, the families of the victims and accused wait outside for the outcome. Among them are two girls, the daughters of the alleged robber and the gas station attendant. Little Luce is playful and headstrong. The older Domenica is almost grown up and appears insecure and dismissive. Relatives come and go, providing meals to those waiting.

History of origin

Palazzo di Giustizia is the debut feature film of the Italian documentary filmmaker Chiara Bellosi , for which she also wrote the screenplay. She stated that it was sheer coincidence that the film was set in a courthouse. In preparation, Bellosi had studied court buildings in Rome and Milan for over a year . The Milan court visited her every morning for a period of six months. It wasn't until one day when Bellosi saw an unkempt girl in a pink tracksuit with her young mother and grandmother on the benches in the hallway that she developed the idea for the figure of Luce. "It is the most depersonalizing and yet most humane place in the world," said Bellosi about the court as the setting for her film.

The shooting took place in Turin from March 2019 and was scheduled for five weeks. Maurizio Calvesi used a mobile camera strapped to his shoulder, with which he could follow the movements of the protagonists.

Palazzo di Giustizia was produced by Carlo Cresto-Dina and his company tempesta as well as by Rai Cinema . The company Cinédokké and Radiotelevisione Svizzera appeared as co-producers . Cresto-Dina met director Bellosi during the production of the episodic film Checosamanca (2006), to which famous feature film directors such as Alice Rohrwacher , Andrea Segre , Andrea D'Ambrosio and Martina Parenti later contributed their first works. Bellosi's short film was about a group of stray dogs on the streets of Catania . Cresto-Dina had kept in touch with her over the years. The film will be distributed in Italy by Istituto Luce Cinecittà. The worldwide exploitation rights are held by Vision Distribution.

Awards

Palazzo di Giustizia was invited to the Generation 14plus competition at the Berlinale 2020 . At the same time, Bellosi's directorial work has been nominated for the GWFF Best First Feature Award.
