Paleokastritsa ( Greek Παλαιοκαστρίτσα , ( f. Sg. )) Is a popular resort on the west coast of Corfu . The name means old castle square and refers to the Angelokastro Castle, which is within sight .
The area around Paleokastritsa consists of two peninsulas and five bays, the panorama of which visitors from the mountain village of Lakones (also called the balcony of the Ionian Sea ) count among the most beautiful on the island. There is no town center as a focal point: Hotels, houses and taverns are scattered over the landscape and are often hidden between olive and cypress trees.
The bay of Agios Spyridon is the starting point for a boat tour to visit some caves. A little bit away a small rock juts out of the sea. According to legend, it is said to be the petrified ship of the Phaiacs , which, according to Greek mythology , was turned into a rock by Poseidon after it brought Odysseus to his homeland, Ithaca. According to Homer's Odyssey , Odysseus reached the coast of Scherias when he was shipwrecked . According to one theory, the beach at Paleokastritsa is said to be the place where Odysseus met Princess Nausicaa . Her father Alcinous , King of the Phaeacians , made sure that Odysseus was brought back to his homeland.
On the northeastern peninsula, high on a rock, is the Panagia Theotokos tis Paleokastritsas monastery , which was founded in 1228, but whose current buildings date from the 18th century. Behind the whitewashed walls of the monastery there are well-tended gardens, flower-covered arcades, an old oil mill and a small museum, in which old icons from the 17th to 19th centuries and a Corfiot Bible from the 13th century are on display.
Paleokastritsa is the birthplace of the Greek-German singer Vicky Leandros .
