The pallet spike ( Oxymonacanthus ) also called the pallet spike or harlequin filefish are a very colorful genus of filefish . They are extreme food specialists and feed exclusively on the polyps of the hard coral genus Acropora .
There are two types :
- Oxymonacanthus halli , whichlivesexclusively in the Red Sea and is 7 centimeters long.
- Oxymonacanthus longirostris , whichlivesin the Indo-Pacific from East Africa to Japan and Tonga and is 12 centimeters long.
Young animals live in small groups, adult animals in pairs.
Aquarium keeping
Pallet spikes are sometimes offered in specialist shops for keeping in saltwater aquariums . However, since their nutritional requirements cannot be met, they starve to death after a short time.
