Palle Lauring

Palle Lauring (born October 16, 1909 in Frederiksberg ; † October 3, 1996 ) was a Danish historian and writer who was awarded the Søren Gyldendal Prize in 1963 for his ten-volume history of Denmark, begun in 1954 .

Life

Palle Lauring, son of a teacher and younger brother of the actor Gunnar Lauring , graduated from Frederiksberg Gymnasium and began studying at the teachers' college in Haderslev in 1927 . He then worked as a history teacher in Copenhagen from 1935 to 1937 .

In the mid-1940s he wrote several historical novels such as Vitellius (1944) and Borger Alexandre (1946). In addition to the historical story Danmarks Håb og Horn (1954), the two youth novels Stendolken (1956) and Ulv i viking (1957) followed, with which he published well-founded accounts of the history of Denmark . He also wrote travel reports and biographies of Danish rulers and other famous Danes. In addition, he dealt with topics such as geology , language, literature and art . Among other things, he translated The History of Art by Ernst Gombrich into Danish ( Kunstens historie , 1954).

For his ten-volume History of Denmark , begun in 1954 , he was awarded the Søren Gyldendal Prize in 1963.

Palle Lauring also became popular in Denmark through his stories and commentary for Danmarks Radio .
