Palmer is a German music electronics brand under which, in addition to sound engineering tools, guitar amplifiers , guitar boxes and effects devices are also manufactured. Palmer products are made by hand in Neu-Anspach , in the Taunus region . The speaker simulators and direct boxes of Palmer are on stages and in most studios used.

history

Palmer was founded in 1980 as a pure 'Custom Amp & Mod Shop'. As such, instruments, guitar amplifiers, and little helpers were repaired and modified. The knowledge learned and the insights gained into customer requirements ultimately flowed into the development of our own products.

Products

Palmer produces by hand. For example, the built-in transformers are developed in-house, and the circuit boards in your products are assembled and soldered by hand.

amplifier

After Palmer initially concentrated on the above-mentioned helpers, the Palmer FAT 50, the first new amplifiers since the 1980s , followed in October 2010 . The Fat 50 is sold as a combo and top with a matching 2 × 12 inch box. The high-gain all-tube amplifier has an output of 50 watts from 2 5881 ( 6L6 ) matched power amp tubes and has one channel each for clean and distorted sounds, which share a 3-band tone control . A total of 4 ECC83 tubes work in the preliminary stage . In addition, the amplifier has an integrated reverb effect , which can be completely removed from the signal path by means of "bypass", an adjustable effects path and a master volume control. The combo version has an Eminence governor loudspeaker installed.

While the presentation of the Fat 50 went off with relatively little media coverage, Palmer received a lot of attention during the 2011 Frankfurt Music Fair . The reason was the presentation of the Palmer DREI , which was on the market from August 2011. This guitar amplifier combines puristic tube technology with a completely new concept, which combines 3 single-ended power amplifier tubes. The characteristics of 3 different tubes or 3 different "single-ended Class A" amplifiers can be combined steplessly. When buying the amp, it includes an EL84 , 6V6 and 6L6 tube, which can also be replaced by KT90 , KT77 or EL34 tubes. Depending on the combination, this results in output powers of 5 to 15 watts. An ECC83 works in the preliminary stage and a GZ34 serves as the rectifier tube. The tone control is controlled by a single potentiometer . The saturation can be controlled in the normal and high frequency range. The amplifier received good reviews internationally and is described as a dynamic, versatile studio amplifier. In the meantime, however, the amplifier is no longer in the range.

In January 2013 the Palmer EINS will follow . An amplifier based on the external design of the Palmer DREI. The output power is 1 watt. As standard it is equipped with an ECC83 preamp tube and an ECC82 power amplifier tube . By exchanging the tubes, a clear change in sound and response is possible. The amplifier has a box simulation which has the same circuit as the PDI 09. In addition, thanks to the Z-High output with integrated load box, the amplifier can also be operated without a box. The Palmer EINS can even be used as a booster or preamplifier. The operation is very purist. The user only has a tone potentiometer, a volume potentiometer and a boost button. With a weight of 2.5 kg and dimensions of 20.6 cm × 10.8 cm × 12.8 cm (W × H × D), the amplifier is unusually handy.

With the Palmer FAB5 Combo , another small tube amp was brought onto the market in September 2013. The combo has a 50s retro design. A 10 ″ Ragin Cajun from Eminence is installed as the loudspeaker . The Class A amplifier is powered by a 12AX7 in the preamp and a 6V6 in the output stage. An EZ81 serves as the rectifier tube . The regulation is again designed puristically. The volume control is used to control the overall volume. A boost control increases the distortion and additional volume. The Tone control cuts the treble. The amplifier has an additional 8 ohm output, as well as a power soak function, with which the total output can be reduced.

Two prototypes of new amplifiers were presented at the NAMM Show 2014 . On the one hand the 20 watt high-gain amp Palmer Haemorrhage with single-ended K88 tube, including PDI09 speaker emulator and effects loop, on the other hand the Palmer TWO , with 2 single-ended power amplifiers that can be mixed or used individually.

Guitar boxes

Since 2010 Palmer has also been offering guitar boxes in various formats. In addition to 1 × 12-inch, 2 × 12-inch and 4 × 12-inch, there is also a 1 × 10-inch box. Common models from Eminence and Celestion are used as speakers . In contrast to the audio tools and amplifiers, the guitar boxes are not made in Germany, but in China . Only the assembly of the speakers and a final inspection takes place in Germany.

Effects pedals

Palmer has offered guitar and bass effects in pedal form since 2010. All of the pedals have a uniform steel box design, which on the one hand should strengthen the robustness, on the other hand should simplify the assembly of different configurations. The pedals are designed in Germany for cost reasons, but produced in China . The effect devices have typical German names for Palmer, such as men's choir ( bass chorus ), Kaputt ( octaver ) or Mutterstolz ( distortion ).

Well-known musicians

Palmer users include Joe Bonamassa , Deftones , Def Leppard , Fall Out Boy , Sum 41 , Godsmack , Apocalyptica , for example .
