Gold fields on the Palmer River
In the 19th century, a gold rush took place on the upper reaches of the Palmer River , which began in 1872. Most of the alluvial gold has now been picked up, but there are still some deeper mines in the area today. The most important settlement in the gold fields was Maytown .
There were many Chinese among the miners , mainly from Guangdong Province in southern China. There were also various confrontations between the settlers and the Aborigines of the area. B. at Battle Camp .
