Palmyra is a city in the US state of Missouri in Marion County, the seat of which is Palmyra. The city has 3600 inhabitants (as of 2017 Population Estimate) and an area of ​​7.15 square kilometers.

history

Palmyra is located approximately 10 km west of the Mississippi . The city lies on a rocky ground with a natural water source, which made the place attractive for settlers. The first house was built by Benjamin Vanlandingham in 1818. Palmyra became the seat of the newly founded Marion Counties.

In 1820 Palmyra had 150 residents. A year later a post office was built.

The Palmyra Spectator was founded in 1839 and is now the oldest continuous newspaper in Missouri.

The Palmyra massacre occurred in 1862 during the American Civil War . Ten Confederate prisoners were hanged in retaliation for the kidnapping of a unionist .
