The Pámisos ( Greek Πάμισος ; earlier ( Slavic ) Πιρνάτζα, Pirnátza ) is the main river of Messenia and one of the most water-rich rivers in the Peloponnese . The perennial springs of the river arise on the slopes of the Taygetos east of the village of Agios Floros and flow into the Messenian Gulf after 17 kilometers . After about 6 kilometers, it picks up the Mavrozumenos flowing in from the north .
At the sources of the river there was an ancient sanctuary for the eponymous river god Pamisus , which was excavated by the Swedish archaeologist Natan Valmin in the 1930s .
