The Panda Datong power plant is a solar park operated by Panda Green Energy in the People's Republic of China , located about 250 km west of Beijing . When viewed from the air, parts of the complex look like two panda bears . The color effects required for this are caused by the conscious use of crystalline solar modules for the dark parts of the “fur” and thin-layer modules for the light parts of the fur.
History and technology
The solar park should have an installed capacity of 100 MWp in the final stage . The project started in May 2016 and construction work began in November 2016. In June 2017, the first expansion phase with 50 MWp was put into operation. Within 25 years, the power plant is to produce around 3.2 billion kWh of solar power, which should save around 1.06 million tons of coal and more than 2.7 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions .
background
In addition to generating electricity, the power plant will also have an educational mandate. For this purpose, the operators signed a contract with the United Nations Environment Program in 2016 . Among other things, a youth center is to be built next to the solar park, in which schoolchildren will be informed about the ecological advantages of renewable energies . Furthermore, attention should be drawn to the threat to the panda bears. The panda is a symbol of endangered animal species worldwide ; only about 1900 animals live in the wild.
Another aim of the project is to draw attention to the New Silk Road , which it has also been part of since May 2017. This is a transport project between Europe and Asia, for which China plans to invest around 900 billion dollars. Among other things, the Panda power plant is to provide energy for this infrastructure measure. The construction of more Panda power plants on the transport corridor is planned as part of the Panda 100 program , but the exact number of such power plants is still unknown. In addition, Panda Green Energy has also concluded cooperation agreements with governments of other countries such as the Republic of Fiji and the Philippines in order to also build such power plants there.
