Pang Chŏng-hwan (born November 9, 1899 in Seoul , Korea , † July 23, 1931 ibid) was a Korean writer .

Life

Pang Chŏng-hwan was born on November 9, 1899 in Seoul , Korea . His stage name is Sop'a (소파 | 小波). He studied child psychology and literature at Tōyō University in Japan . He died of kidney failure in Seoul on July 23, 1931 .

Pang is considered to be the father of Korean children's literature. He founded the magazine Kinder (어린이), a literary magazine for children, which was published from 1923 to 1934, and helped establish children's literature in stories, songs and plays as a genre of its own. He wrote stories, adaptations and translations for the literary magazine that give an impression of his care for the problems of children, v. a. those that result from material need, had understanding. In his works, good always triumphs over bad in the end. He also tried other ways to improve children's lives, both culturally and materially. He organized theater festivals and public readings as part of a cultural movement for children and was one of the initiators in introducing Children's Day in Korea, which was first celebrated on May 1, 1922 . He also founded a number of organizations for children.
