Pao-Lu Hsu

Pao-Lu Hsu , also Xu Bao-Lu or Xu Baolu, (born September 1, 1910 in Beijing , † December 18, 1970 there ) was a Chinese mathematician who dealt with probability theory and statistics.

Xu Bao-Lu came from a Mandarin family in Hangzhou . He went to school in Beijing and began to study chemistry at Yangjing University in 1928 and mathematics at Tsing Hua University from 1930 with a bachelor's degree in 1933. He then worked as an assistant at Peking University. It was first published in 1935 on topology in the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society . In 1936 he passed exams that allowed him to continue studying in England at University College with Egon Pearson , Ronald Aylmer Fisher and Jerzy Neyman . In 1938 he became a lecturer and in 1938 received a Ph.D. and a D. Sc. In his first publications in the Statistical Research Memoirs, edited by Egon Pearson and Jerzy Neyman, he treated the Behrens-Fisher problem and optimal estimators for the variance within the framework of Gauss-Markow's theorem . In 1940, when the war broke out, he went back to China, became a professor at Peking University, but went through hard times (hunger). In 1943/44 he was in correspondence with Neyman. In 1945 he visited the USA and took part in the first Berkeley Symposium on Probability and Statistics, taught at Berkeley University, Columbia University and in 1946/47 at the University of North Carolina, where he was an associate professor, before becoming professor again in 1947 went to Beijing. Abraham Wald and others tried to keep him in the USA several times in vain. As early as the 1950s, his health deteriorated significantly, which hindered him in lectures, but he continued his scientific work until his death.

Among other things, he dealt with matrix theory in statistics ( multivariate analysis ) and most recently with the application of algebraic coding theory in the design of experiments.
