Paolo Dondarini

Paolo Dondarini (born January 10, 1968 in Bologna ) is a former Italian football referee .

Since 2000 Dondarini was one of the referees for the highest Italian leagues. His first appearance in Serie A was on September 9, 2001, the encounter between Piacenza Calcio and US Lecce . In 2004 he was entrusted with the Roman derby between AS Roma and Lazio . Since the beginning of 2005 he has also been active on the international stage.

In 2006 his name became known in connection with the Calciopoli scandal . After the investigation into the manipulation of championship games, he was banned from any activity in the soccer field for a period of three and a half years in July 2006. In the second (August 17, 2006) and third (October 27, 2006) judgment, however, he was acquitted.

On October 13, 2007, Dondarini led the European Championship qualifier between Liechtenstein and Sweden (0: 3) in the Vaduz Rheinpark .

In the criminal follow-up trial of Calciopoli , led by the Public Prosecutor in Naples , he was sentenced to two years imprisonment on December 14, 2009 for sports fraud. Three co-defendants were also convicted and seven were acquitted. The court held that it had been established that “a criminal organization had been set up to influence the football championship” and that the convicts were jointly responsible for the manipulation scandal.
