Papa Benz
Josef Friedrich "Papa" Benz ( October 19, 1863 in Gengenbach - February 9, 1928 in Munich ) was a German opera singer ( tenor ), innkeeper, cabaret director and bohemian father.
Life
Benz, originally an opera tenor and active as such in Colmar, Regensburg, Hanover and Hamburg, came to the operetta in Munich in 1899 at the Theater am Gärtnerplatz, where he made his debut as the “Gypsy Baron”. In 1900, however, he retired from the stage and founded Café Benz at Leopoldstrasse 50 in Munich. There occurred u. a. Elise and Julius Beck , Liesl Karlstadt and Karl Valentin .
He was married to the singer Mathilde Benz (1880-1967), his daughter was the actress Lee Parry (1901-1977).
