Papilio troilus is a butterfly from the family of the swallowtail butterfly (Papilionidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 75 to 100 millimeters. The top of their forewings is predominantly black in color and has light yellowish spots along the outer edge. The hind wings have a bluish tinge in the females and a blue-green tinge in the males. They have a series of light yellow to light blue crescent moon spots along the outer edge on the top. There is a red spot on the front edge, another can be in the inner corner. The underside of the forewings is colored similarly to the upper side, but has another row of light yellowish spots near the center. The hind wings have two rows of red-orange spots in the rear half, one across the wing half, one along the outer edge. Some of the spots have a light yellow border. The wings shimmer bluish between the rows of spots.

Occurrence

The animals are found in eastern North America from southern Canada to Florida . To the west, its range extends to Oklahoma and central Texas . Occasionally they can also be seen in North Dakota , Colorado, and Cuba . They live in deciduous forests, in fields and meadows, in wooded swamps, but also in parks and gardens. You are not at risk.

Way of life

The imagoes sucking nectar of Lonicera japonica , Spring herbs ( Impatiens ), thistles , milkweed ( Asclepias ), azaleas , Apocynum , Lantana ( Lantana ), mimosa ( Mimosa ) and Clethra alnifolia . The males fly around in search of females. These lay their eggs individually on the underside of the leaves of the host plants. The nocturnal caterpillars live hidden in a leaf rolled up by silk.

Flight times

The animals fly in the south in several generations per year from March to December, in the north in two generations from April to October.

The caterpillars feed mainly on Lindera benzoin and the sassafras tree ( Sassafras albidum ). Occasionally they are also found on Zanthoxylum americanum and the tulip tree ( Liriodendron tulipifera ), swamp magnolia ( Magnolia virginiana ), camphor tree ( Cinnamomum camphora ) and Persea borbonia .
