The Pappenheimer Berg , an 834.5  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Thuringian slate mountains , is located in the local area of Ernstthal and rises above Lauscha in the district of Sonneberg . It extends south of the Rennsteig and is therefore included in the Southern High Slate Mountains . Hiking trails lead from both places over the mountain ridge with views of the Lauschatal. The three slopes of the Ernstthal ski paradise, which is also a summer toboggan run, extend from its summit to the southern exit of Ernstthal, with a total length of 1300 m (500 m lift and 800 m downhill) one of the largest facilities in Germany.

In the north of the massif, the Rennsteig runs over the foothills of the Ernstthaler Steig ( 810  m above sea level ), the interface with the Eisenberg massif . To the west the Brehmenstall (776 m) joins in the local area of ​​Ernstthal, in the south the plateau of the Pappenheimer Berg merges into that of the Großer Tierberg (805 m). The elevation south of this narrow point is also called Kleiner Tierberg (769 m). The Marktiegelschanze is located in the western side valley between the two mountains . Further south, about halfway to the main summit, the Schnitzerskopf (760 m) rises. The Breite Berg (783 m) rises to the southeast of the Großer Tierberg. The interface between these mountains is marked by old slate heaps. The Bergmannsklause restaurant is located here.

South of the Tiergarten mountain, by a notch much of this and thus separated from Pappenheimer massif that is Steinacher Oberndorf on a mountain (570 m), the officially designated as Small animal mountain, but known locally Bockberg and already the western Franconian Forest attributed becomes.

In the east of the Pappenheimer Berg, also clearly separated by a notch, the Limberg (793 m) rises above Hasenthal. The Mittelberg rises to the northeast , to which there is a narrow seam on the Rennsteig. The eastern neighbor on the Rennsteig is the Hohe Schuß .
