The orchid Papuaea reticulata is the only species in the genus Papuaea . She comes from New Guinea.

description

Papuaea reticulata is a small, herbaceous , terrestrial plant. It has a creeping rhizome with few internodes . The above-ground shoots are covered with a few leaves . The leaf blade is elliptical, at the base it narrows to a short petiole that surrounds the shoot tubular. The leaves show a white, reticulated veining on a reddish green background.

The terminal inflorescence is unbranched, the inflorescence axis is hairy. There are some bracts on the peduncle . The bracts of the flowers are about as long as the peduncle and ovary together, the bracts and ovary are not hairy. The flowers are not resupinated and also hairless. Of the three outer petals ( sepals ), the two lateral ones are significantly larger, they encompass the base of the lip . The lateral inner petals ( petals ) are linear to lanceolate, they adhere with the edge to the upper sepal. The lip is elliptical-lyre-shaped in outline, at the base it is fused with the column . The lip is divided into three parts: the base (hypochil) is hemispherical, with two hook-shaped appendages inside. The middle part of the lip, the mesochil, is elliptical, the edge of the lip is thickened here. The front part of the lip (epichil) is very short and ends with three or four fingers. The scar consists of a contiguous area. The stamen is oval to obverse-club-shaped in outline, it contains two pollinia , which are connected with the small common, lanceolate adhesive disc ( Viscidium ). The separating tissue between the stigma and the stamen ( rostellum ) is narrowly triangular, deeply two-toothed after the viscidium has been removed.

distribution

Papuaea reticulata is known from a few specimens from New Guinea, both from the east and north coast of the island. The plants grow in the shade of evergreen rainforests on humus soils at altitudes of 380 to 1500 meters.

Botanical history and systematics

Papuaea reticulata is classified within the tribe Cranichideae in the subtribe Goodyerinae . According to Dressler, this can be further divided into two groups; Papuaea stands together with the majority of the genera that do not have two clearly separated areas of scarring. Papuaea reticulata was described by Rudolf Schlechter in 1919 . The name of the genus is derived from its origin ( Papua New Guinea ). The name of the species, reticulata , is derived from the Latin word for "reticulate". Papuaea reticulata shows some resemblance to Macodes .
