Paraserianthes lophantha (Syn .: Albizia lophantha ) is the only species of the monotypical plant genus Paraserianthes within the legume family (Fabaceae). This endemic occurs naturally only on the southwest coast of the Australian state of Western Australia . English-language common names are: "Albizia", Cape Leeuwin Wattle, Cape Wattle, Crested Wattle, plume albizia.

Vegetative characteristics

Paraserianthes lophantha grows as an evergreen shrub or small tree . The bark of the ribbed branches is hairy.

The alternate leaves arranged on the branches are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is 3 to 8 inches long. The double-pinnate leaf blade has 8 to 15 pairs of first-order leaflets and 20 to 40 pairs of leaflets on each of the second-order leaflets. The stipules are tiny.

Generative characteristics

Numerous flowers are grouped together in a cylindrical, bottle-brush-like inflorescence . The petals are greenish-white.

The bare, straight legumes are up to 15 inches long and about 1.8 inches wide and have many seeds. The seeds are dark brown or black.

distribution

This endemic occurs naturally only on the southwest coast of Western Australia from Fremantle to King George Sound . Ferdinand von Mueller first spread Paraserianthes lophantha by giving packets of seeds to the early explorers of Australia in the expectation that the seeds placed in their storage areas would later make their travel routes traceable.

Paraserianthes lophantha is considered an invasive plant in areas of Australia where it is not indigenous , as well as in New Zealand , South Africa , the Canary Islands and Chile .

Systematics

In the course of a revision of the Ingeae tribe , genus A was first separated from Nielsen in 1981 and the genus Paraserianthes was created in 1992 . The new genus contained four species, one with two subspecies and another with two varieties, and was divided into two sections , Paraserianthes and Falcataria . The species of Paraserianthes used to belong to a section of the genus Albizia and were assigned to the new genus by Nielsen due to the uniform flowers. In 1996, Barneby and Grimes saw the section Falcataria as a separate, new genus and Paraserianthes as monotypical with a species with four varieties. According to Lewis and Rico 2005, the genus Paraserianthes is monotypical with one species.

From Paraserianthes lophantha two subspecies are described :

  • Paraserianthes lophantha ( Willd. ) ICNielsen subsp. lophantha with original distribution area in southwestern Australia .
  • Paraserianthes lophantha subsp. montana ( Jungh. ) ICNielsen widespread in tropical Asia .

Barneby and Grimes suggested in 1996 that Paraserianthes lophantha is morphologically variable, but with minor genetic differences and thus without subtaxa .
