Parc Natural dels Ports

The Parc Natural dels Ports is a natural park in Catalonia that covers most of the Ports de Tortosa-Beseit . It was established by decree on June 12, 2001. In this decree, in addition to the establishment of the Parc Natural dels Ports, part of the Els Ports beech forest was also placed under nature protection. The park is about 50 km inland, halfway between Barcelona and Valencia.

It covers a zone of 35,050 hectares , including 867 hectares of nature reserves . Included communities in the park are:

Flora and fauna

In the highest areas, the park has extensive forests of Scots pine , while in the lower areas there are well preserved holm oak forests as well as stands of Kermes oak ; In both forest areas there is plenty of bush ( common boxwood ). A beech forest area ( red beech ) has also been preserved, one of the southernmost in Europe. The most famous beech in the park is the “faig pare”, the “father of the beeches”.

The leading animal in the park is the Iberian ibex ; there is also a large colony of griffon vultures .
