The Prehistoric Park ( Italian Parco della Preistoria ) is a natural park with more than 100 hectares of forest on the edge of the Italian municipality of Rivolta d'Adda , province of Cremona , about 20 kilometers east of Milan . The park borders the Adda River and contains 30 reconstructions of prehistoric animals (including prehistoric men), a hundred semi-free wildlife, a botanical route with signaled plants, natural environments (a swamp, lawns, lakes, etc.), picnic areas, a cafe, play parks, a maze and shows of fossils etc along a shaded course. Access to the park is only for pedestrians, but bicycles and dogs with leashes are permitted. The park is also recognized by various national and local bodies that confirm the validity of the structure as a guide for environmental education not only for children but also for adults.

History of the park

The construction of the park lasted from March 1976 to 1978. In the process, prehistoric animals were reconstructed in detail using fossil skeletons. Miniature models were then reconstructed in fiberglass to recreate them in full-size.

botany

flora

On the left bank of the Adda, the park offers a variety of vegetation and partly wooded formations. The forests of northern Italy have been exposed to various agricultural reclamation and deforestation activities for many centuries. In this river line, however, it is actually possible to experience the last edges of the jungle, which are characterized by deciduous trees. The wood of the park is home to a mixed variety of trees such as maple, oak, poplar, elm, locust, willow, etc. The park has a variety of wild plants (such as violets, primroses, hawthorn, etc.).

The park wood is a mixture of deciduous trees. The forest structure is divided into three layers: arboreal, shrubby and grassy. The tree layer consists of tall trees (over 15 m on average). The leaves of the trees in this layer are temporarily covered and give the impression of an open forest. The bushy layer is characterized by plants of different heights (from 1 to 7 m). The grass layer is made up of various ground plants, including climbing plants such as ivy.

The swamp

In the last part of the tour there is a swamp that borders the nearby Herons Lake ( Lago degli Aironi ). It is characterized by a large curve that has developed over time with the separation from the cited lake (meander). The vegetation is characterized by willows and larches, as well as water lilies and watercress. There are cattails and reeds in the muddy parts . The remaining vegetation consists of typical underwater plants and reed species.
