Park Bum Shin (born August 24, 1946 in Nonsan , Ch'ungch'ŏngnam-do ) is a South Korean writer.

Life

Park was born on August 24, 1946 in Nonsan , South Ch'ungch'ŏng Province . In 1973 he published his first work while working as a teacher in a middle school. His first story was The Remnants of Summer (여름 의 잔해). In 1979 he began his work Bent like a blade of grass (풀잎 처럼 눕다) to publish as a serial novel in the newspaper JoongAng Ilbo , other novels followed. The two novels Land of Fire (불의 나라) and Land of Water (물의 나라) appeared in the Dong-a Ilbo newspaper in the 1980s and received approval from the critics. Both stories satirically portray the ambitions and disappointments of two rural boys who move to Seoul at the time of industrialization and urbanization . The novels also reflect the personal experiences of the author, who came into contact with the urban lifestyle as a young man. Due to the great success of the two novels, film adaptations for both cinema and television followed.

Other works by Park deal with the phase of Korea's economic rise. These works describe - as romance or detective novels - the dreams of frustrated city dwellers. However, the more famous he became, the more he loathed to be called a writer who was geared towards popular tastes. In 1993 he suddenly announced in a newspaper that he could not finish his novel. Finally, he could no longer withstand the criticism and stopped writing for three years. It was not until 1996 that he published the book The cart drawn by the white cow (흰소 가 끄는 수레).

After returning to the literary stage, he revised his older novels. In recent years he has been writing his memories as well as works on nature and life based on his travel experiences abroad.
