The Parkeisenbahn Lauchhammer is a narrow-gauge former pioneer railway that has been running in the castle park in Lauchhammer-West since 1955 . Public transport takes place on the railway about ten days a year. From 1952 to 1959 another pioneer railway operated in Lauchhammer-Süd .

history

On the initiative of the former lignite works “Friendship”, a track system with a length of 150 m including an artificial tunnel was built in 1952 in Pushkin Park in what is now Lauchhammer-Süd . After the opening on May 1, 1952, a battery-powered locomotive and eight converted wagons from the lignite works' mine operated on the 500-mm-gauge layout . The locomotive was later powered by a 40-volt overhead line until the ROSI diesel locomotive began service in 1954. At the same time, the route was extended to 400 m. It is reported that - as is usual with pioneer railways - posts such as train conductors or dispatchers were filled with members of the pioneer organization "Ernst Thälmann" . The railway was operated on the weekends. In 1959 the facilities in Lauchhammer-Süd were dismantled.

In 1954, the “Friedenswacht” lignite works had started to build a 500-mm-lane circuit with a length of 450 m, the “Friedenswacht” pioneer station and two form signals in what was then the Volkspark in Lauchhammer-West . On July 3, 1955, this pioneer railway, supervised by the connecting railway of the Lauchhammer coking plant, began its service. The LUZI diesel locomotive and eight open passenger cars were available there. In the beginning, children and young people were also active on this railway. It was operated on the weekends, later only on special occasions. The AMANDA diesel locomotive has been part of the fleet since 1957. After the pioneer railway in Lauchhammer-Süd was closed in 1959, its vehicles also came to Lauchhammer-West.

In 1972 an artificial tunnel was built, which also served to accommodate the three locomotives and the 16 cars. The route was changed for this purpose. In 1977 the course of the route, which until then had led directly along the auditorium of the open-air stage in the park, was changed again. In 1982 the tunnel was torn down because it was in disrepair and a locomotive shed was built. The circuit has existed in its current form since 1983.

Because of the worn out locomotive and wagon fleet, the railway was initially taken out of service in 1999. After the financing of the necessary repair work was secured in 2002, the AMANDA locomotive was overhauled. In addition, the superstructure was renewed as part of a job creation measure. On July 5, 2003, the 50th anniversary of Lauchhammer's town charter , the railway was put back into operation. In 2004 the other two locomotives were also repaired and signals and a signal box were installed. The hurricane Kyrill , the serious damage caused in January 2007 in the castle grounds, also attracted the track body affected. In 2009 and 2010 the two bridges over the inner ditch were renovated.

In 2017 all wheel sets of the vehicles were renewed. The state of Brandenburg provided 37,000 euros from lottery funds for financing .

Until the 1970s, the railway was referred to as the pioneer railway or pioneer railway . The term pioneer railway is also used in today's literature for that epoch . Later names of the railway were Parkbahn and, from 2003, Parkexpress . The current name is according to the service regulations on the basis of which the train operation is carried out, Parkeisenbahn Lauchhammer.

At least since the 1970s, the railway has been operated exclusively by adults. At the end of the 1970s, there were considerations to involve pupils from the then Juri-Gagarin-Oberschule Lauchhammer in driving operations.

Operation and facilities

Today it is operated on the basis of the building and operating regulations for pioneer railways . A train ride consists of several round trips in clockwise direction without stopping (so-called pack trips ). Two-train operation is possible. Access to the trains is from the platform in the northern part of the facility, known as the “station”. There are also two small buildings from the time the railway was built. Another building is the two-tier locomotive shed, which is connected to the circuit via a short branch track and in which all vehicles can be parked. This is also where the railway's only two points are located. The official mileage - but there are no milestones - begins at the junction to the locomotive shed.

The operator of the railway is the city of Lauchhammer, which is supported by around 16 volunteers who call themselves Friends of the Park Railway . The work of this group was recognized in April 2018 with the "Medal of the Brandenburg State Parliament".

Train operations take place around ten days a year. The fare is 1.50 euros for adults and children from 14 years of age and 1.00 euros for children from three years of age (2019).

Diesel locomotives

Initially, a battery locomotive was used in Lauchhammer-Süd. Diesel locomotives have been providing traction since 1954. The design of the locomotives is based on the external appearance of steam locomotives . The maximum speed of the locomotives and trains is 10 km / h.

The information on the origin of the locomotives is inconsistent. According to Erhard Scheindel, these are individual vehicles that were built by companies in Lauchhammer. According to the Internet portal Bahn-Express, the constructions are based on locomotives of the type LKM Ns 1 , which were intended for a gauge of 600 mm. Only adjustment work such as re-gauging or equipping with new diesel engines had been carried out in the companies.

Locomotive ROSI is currently (2018) inoperable.

Passenger cars

There are two wagon trains with eight open wagons each.

Since 2018, the railway has had a car with a leaf blower for cleaning the track.
