The Parndorfer Platte or Parndorfer Heide is an approximately 200 km² large plain in northern Burgenland .

Location and landscape

Energy development ( Andau / Halbturn wind farm )

With an altitude of 160 to 180  m above sea level. A. it lies between the Leithagebirge and the Hundsheimer (Hainburger) mountains on the eastern edge of the Brucker Pforte . It thus forms the connection between the Alps and the Carpathians as well as between the Vienna Basin and the Little Hungarian Plain (Kisalföld in Hungarian).

To the north is the Leithaboden , southeast of the Heideboden , both of which continue east into the Mosoni-sík (Moson plain) of the Leitha. The Prellenkirchner Flur connects to the west between Leithabergen to the southwest and Hundsheimer Bergen to the northwest . In the south, the Parndorfer Platte falls into the basin of Lake Neusiedl .

The main town is Parndorf . Otherwise the area is very sparsely populated. Large areas used for agriculture dominate.

Due to the ice age terrace gravel deposits, the area is not very watery. The terrace, which slopes heavily towards Lake Neusiedl, is around 30 m higher than the flat areas on Lake Neusiedl and the Vienna Basin. It is Danube gravel , which probably comes from the Middle Pleistocene (Old Ice Age), the Bruck Gate is an old breakthrough valley of the original Danube . Another natural phenomenon is the wind blowing through the gate, the Parndorfer Platte is one of the windiest inland regions in Europe. Due to these special features, an independent microclimate has developed. Therefore the heather has a specific flora . But the fauna that lives here is also quite unique for Austria. Among other things, the great bustard and the imperial eagle live here . This is why the Parndorfer Platte - Heideboden bird sanctuary (Natura2000) is designated here.

These special conditions in the context of nature conservation had to be  taken into account when building the A4 Ostautobahn . Own green bridges were built and delayed construction.

The numerous wind turbines take advantage of the location with a greater wind speed than most of the coastal regions of the North Sea. For this reason, BEWAG set up several wind farms here ; in 2010 it was already operating 138 wind turbines here. As of 2013, 150 more wind turbines in the 3 MW class were under construction, 79 of them in the Andau / Halbturn wind farm alone .
