Pascal Salin (born May 16, 1939 in Paris ) is a French economist from the Vienna School and former university professor at the University of Paris-Dauphine . He is a past president of the Mont Pelerin Society (1994–1996). He is also adjunct scholar at the Ludwig von Mises Institute in Auburn (Alabama) . The main focus of his research is finance and monetary theory . He is one of the most famous French representatives of the Austrian School .

Life

Salin was born in Paris on May 16, 1939. He first studied at the law faculty of the University of Bordeaux . He then pursued economic studies at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris . After graduating, he did his doctorate and completed a degree in sociology with a license .

He began his scientific career as an assistant in Paris from 1961 to 1966. In 1967 he became maître de conférences at the Universities of Poitiers and Nantes . In 1970 he became a professor at the University of Paris-Dauphine , where he taught until 2007. He heads the Center de Recherche en Théorie Economique Jean-Baptiste Say

His students include François Guillaumat, Bertrand Lemennicier and Cécile Philippe.

He has worked as an advisor to the International Monetary Fund , the Government of Niger , the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Harvard Institute for International Development.

Between 1994 and 1996 he was President of the Mont Pelerin Society . He sits on the academic advisory board of the Liberal Institute in Zurich.

to teach

The focus of his work lies in the areas of financial policy and monetary policy . In particular, he opposes narrow banking and defends free banking .

In addition to the French liberals, his works are mainly influenced by the Austrian School : Frédéric Bastiat , Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek . He represents minarchist and anarcho-capitalist positions, which he justifies from a natural law perspective. He strictly rejects utilitarianism .

He publishes regularly in Le Québécois Libre . His main works are La Verité sur la monnaie (1990), Macro-économie (1991), L'Arbitraire fiscal (1996), Libéralisme (2000) and Français, n'ayez pas peur du libéralisme! (2007).

In European politics he is in favor of the Bolkestein Directive . He rejects the EU constitution of 2004 .
