Passionel's diary is a German war silent film from 1916 with a propaganda orientation. Directed by Louis Ralph , who also played the leading role of the French militarist Michel Passionel.

action

First World War , 1914/15. Heavy fighting broke out between German and French troops in northern France. The young Frenchman Michel Passionel experienced the hell of killing on various sections of the front such as near Arras, in the Argonne Forest and near Verdun. Like many of his compatriots, all his soldierly actions are determined by burning hatred of the German “hereditary enemy”. But when he got to know the Germans better through a turn in the war, his attitude towards the enemy changed. His diary entries, which he has kept since his deployment in the field, give eloquent information about this change in attitudes, how he “is gradually going from an ardent chauvinist and German hater to a friend and admirer of Germany, whose moving“ final thoughts ”of love for this hostile country are the his knowledge and conviction one day the love of the world will belong to him. "

Production notes

Passionel's diary was created immediately after the publication of the diary entries of the same name edited by Willy Norbert and published in 1915 by the Vita Deutsches Verlagshaus Berlin. They were subtitled “Papers left behind by a French soldier who fell”. The five-stroke passed the censorship test in September 1916 and was probably premiered a little later. The main purpose of the film was to paint a positive image of the Germans on the part of the war opponents (in this case France).

Emil Jannings played one of his early film roles here, which in this particular case was still relatively small.
