Paternoster cliff
The Paternoster Cliff in the Harz is a rock near the town of Ilsenburg in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt .
Geography and geology
The Paternoster cliff is located in the Harz National Park about 2.8 km (as the crow flies ) south-southwest of the Ilsenburg core town. It is located a little northeast and high above the confluence of the Loddenke in the Ilse at an altitude of 522 m above sea level. NN .
The rock formation is made of Ilsetal granite and is characterized by intensive wool sack weathering . It is designated as a geological natural monument ( geotope ).
Others
According to a legend, the name Paternoster Cliff derives from the last Our Father (Paternoster) , which a group of nuns prayed here before they threw themselves to their death while fleeing from robber barons.
The hiking trail leads past the cliff from Ilsestein to Plessenburg . If the visibility is good, there is a broad view over the Ilsetal towards the south-southwest to the Brocken from the rock .
