Pathogen was an Australian melodic death metal band from Perth that was formed in 1995 and disbanded in 2011.

history

The band was formed in September 1995 by guitarist Aidan Barton, singer Tim "Floppy" Paterson and drummer Gavin Irving, although the members were still in high school at the time. With the addition of guitarist John Cuypers and bassist Phil Norman, the line-up was expanded, but both did not stay in the band long. First, Mark Rodregez joined as bassist. Then the guitarist David Sandstrom and the bassist Louis Dunstan were added briefly as replacements, but left the group again shortly afterwards. However, Sandstrom returned as a bassist. Further line-up changes followed by replacing Paterson with Justin Norton and Iriving with Mark Boeijen. It was during this period that the first two demos appeared : the first in 1996, called Tyranny of Hatred , which was recorded with Al Smith at Bergerk Studios . A second followed in 1998 under the name Nightfall . The demo was reviewed in various magazines such as Nordic Vision , Terrorizer and SOD . The recordings for this took place in 1997 with Smith in the VHS studios . In mid-1999 Pathogen played as the opening act for Impaled Nazarene , before the single Shallow was released in 2000 . The song was played on various radio stations such as Triple J and 2RRR . It is also featured on Metal from the Bottom of the Earth and 2RRR's sampler Underearthed . Then the singer Cain Cressall, the guitarist Glenn Dyson and the drummer Louis Rando were added as new members. In 2002 the band played with Mayhem before appearing with Opeth in February 2003 . During this time the band worked on their debut album. In July 2004, Cressall decided to leave the band, whereupon Mike Lenane joined. In early 2005 the band played with Shadows Fall and As I Lay Dying . At this time work on the album was finished. The album was released in April under the name Bloodline on Prime Cuts Music and contains 13 songs. The recordings for this had taken place with Aidan Barton in the Sovereign Studios . After a national tour with Children of Bodom in October 2005, Rando left the band and was replaced by Ben Mazzarol. In August 2006, Pathogen was the support act on The Black Dahlia Murder's first Australian tour, before the band played with Arch Enemy in October. In the same year the band also appeared together with Dark Tranquility . In February of the following year, Lenane and Mazzarol split from the rest of the band. Cressall and Boeijen returned for performances with Lamb of God . Then Scott Farrell came on as a drummer. After appearing with Amon Amarth in early 2008, the band was almost completely inactive. In 2010 she announced her last appearance for January 2, 2011. The members then devoted themselves to other projects. In their career, the band also played with Fear Factory and Entombed, among others .

style

Simon Milburn from themetalforge.com wrote in his review of Bloodline that it was playing Swedish- style melodic death metal . In addition to similarities to Opeth, he also found some to Carcass or Death . Ken of metalreviews.com confirmed this by also noting that the band was heavily influenced by Swedish Melodic Death Metal for the album. The group also processed influences from classic death metal and aggressive thrash metal . As a reference, he mentioned In Flames several times , but he also found the comparison with Dark Tranquility, At the Gates or Kreator to be appropriate.
