Patriarca family

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Patriarca family ( Patriarca crime family ), also known as the New England Crime Family , Providence Crime Family , Boston Crime Family or The Office is an Italian-American mafia family of the American Cosa Nostra from New England . The family is divided into two factions; one in Providence, Rhode Island and one in Boston, Massachusetts.

history

In the beginning there were two separate Mafia families in New England. One in Boston and one in Providence. The Boston family was founded in 1916 by Gaspare Messina and the Providence family in 1917 by Frank Morelli . In December 1930 or early 1931 Gaspare Messina was even temporarily elected "Capo dei Capi" (boss of the bosses ) of the American Mafia. Messina withdrew from the family business in the early 1930s and passed away. In 1931 Filippo Buccola took office as the boss of the Boston family. In 1932 he merged his family with Morelli's family from Providence to form the New England Crime Family . Buccola retired to Sicily in 1954 and died of natural causes in 1987 at the age of 101.

On November 14, 1957, the so-called Apalachin Meeting took place. A gathering of almost all the La Cosa Nostra bosses in the Apalachin Ward, New York. The meeting was ended prematurely by the police. The police succeeded in ascertaining the personal details of 62 Mafiosi (including Raymond Patriarca).

The situation worsened for Patriarca and his family in 1961 when Robert F. Kennedy began cracking down on organized crime. Law enforcement agencies worked together to get an informant from New England Mafia circles. They finally succeeded in doing so in 1966 when Joe Barboza , a hit-man (enforcer) of the Patriarca family, who was said to have killed 26 people, was arrested with a load of guns. Barboza was concerned that Patriarca had failed to secure his bail and two of his friends were murdered while trying to pay bail. Barboza became an informant, and not long afterwards, Patriarca and underboss Enrico Tameleo were charged in 1967 for the murder of a Providence bookmaker. Patriarca was arrested in 1969 and released in 1974. Nonetheless, until his death in 1984, Patriaca was plagued by law enforcement agencies and repeatedly blamed for a wide variety of crimes.

After Patriarca's death, the New England Mafia went through a long period of decline from law enforcement and internal violence. Gennaro Angiulo tried to take over the position of Patriarca, Sr. in 1984 while on remand while in prison. But with the help of Ilario Zannino , top captain of the family, Patriarca's son Raymond Patriarca, Jr. secured this position, whereupon Zannino Consigliere was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 1987. Angiulo was sentenced to 45 years in prison. Other high-ranking members such as Henry Tameleo and Francesco Intiso also died or were imprisoned.

William Grasso a gangster from East Hartford was made an underboss due to the poor leadership of the younger Patriarch . Some investigators assumed that Grasso was secretly in charge. But this assumption ended in 1989 with the murder of Grasso. Grasso's death weakened the position of Patriarca, Jr. Nicholas Bianco was believed to be responsible for the death of Grasso, but Grasso became underboss in 1989 and ultimately boss of the Patriarca family in 1991.

On March 26, 1990, Raymond Patriarca, Jr. and 20 other family members and associates were charged on numerous counts of extortion, drug-stolen goods, gambling and murder. Besides Patriarca, Jr. it was Underboss Bianco, Consigliere Joseph Russo , as well as Biagio DiGiacomo, Vincent Ferrara, Matthew Guglielmetti, Joseph A. Tiberi Sr., Dennis Lepore, Gaetano J. Milano, Jack Johns, John "Sonny" Castagna, Louis Fallia, Frank and Louis Pugliono, Frank Colontoni and Robert Carrozza. These charges have been described as "the most sweeping attack ever launched on a single organized crime family." One of the most telling pieces of evidence was a tape recording of an induction ceremony at which 13 mafiosi were present. Because of this nakedness, Patriarca, Jr, was deposed by Bianco. However, in 1991, Bianco was sentenced to 11 years in prison and eight other family members found guilty. In 1993, 26 more Mafiosi were indicted and convicted of illegally operating bookmaking.

In January 1995 the new boss Frank Salemme was charged with extortion of protection money along with Stephen Flemmi and the notorious James J. Bulger . In court, Salemme discovered that Flemmi and Bulger had been working as informants for the FBI for a long time . Bulger's childhood friend, FBI agent John Connolly, let him carry out his criminal operations with impunity for information regarding the Patriarca family. These events were filmed in the 2015 movie Black Mass . After Salemme's imprisonment, a rogue faction led by Robert F. Carrozza , Anthony Ciampi and Michael P. Romano, Sr. waged a war against the Salemme loyalists. In 1997, 15 members of this breakaway faction were charged by the FBI. On December 9, 1999, Salemme pleaded guilty to extortion and was sentenced to 11 years in prison on February 23, 2000.

During these events, Luigi “Baby Shacks” Manocchio became the official head of the family in 1996. He has been described as "a clever and opportunistic old school leader" and "tough and competent". Mannochio's headquarters was a laundromat in Federal Hill, Providence. According to reports, Mannocchio resigned as headman in 2009, leaving the post of new boss to his consigliere named Peter J. Limone .

The influential East Boston gangster and underboss named Carmen S. “The Cheese Man” DiNunzio , brother of former acting boss Anthony L. , took over the role of deputy boss after his release from prison in 2015, after Limone went into semi-retirement went. DiNunzio named Capo Matthew "Matty" Guglielmetti his underboss. Peter Limone died of natural causes in June 2017.

Head of the family

The head of a family cannot always be identified so clearly; especially if another family member comes to the fore due to a prison sentence. The external view does not always make it easy to recognize a new head as such or to determine his exact term of office. In addition, a presidential system seems to be establishing itself to a certain extent; ie the head shifts his power more to a so-called “acting boss” and / or “street boss”, who in turn continue to recognize the head as such, even if he is, for example, in custody.
