Patrick M. Hughes (born September 19, 1942 in Great Falls , Montana ) is a former Lieutenant General in the US Army . Most recently he was director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).

Life

Hughes did his military service in the US Army between 1962 and 1965 after graduating from high school in Manhattan, Montana . He then studied at Montana State University and graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science (BSCommerce).

As early as 1967 he rejoined the US Army and rose to lieutenant general over the course of his more than 30-year career. During his service, he completed a postgraduate course in business administration at Central Michigan University , completing this in 1978 with a Master of Arts (MABusiness Management). During his military career, he was particularly active in intelligence units and, among other things, commander of the 109th Military Intelligence Battalion in Fort Lewis and the 501st Military Intelligence Brigade belonging to the 8th US Army in Yongsan Garrison near Seoul .

In 1990 he became Commanding General of the US Army Intelligence (USAI) and as such was also Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence in the US Army until 1992 . He was then director of intelligence at US Central Command , before he was director of intelligence between 1994 and 1996 and sat for the DIA in the office of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff .

Most recently, between 1996 and 1999, he was director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), which serves as the umbrella organization for the intelligence services of the four armed forces . After completing this position, General Hughes retired in 1999 .

In 2003, he became Assistant Secretary for Information Analysis (Intelligence ) in the United States Department of Homeland Security, and served until March 2005.
