Patrick O'Donoghue

Patrick O'Donoghue (born May 4, 1934 in Morne Abbey , County Cork , Ireland ) is emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Lancaster .

Life

Patrick O'Donoghue was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Westminster in 1967 .

Pope John Paul II appointed O'Donoghue Titular Bishop of Tulana on May 18, 1993 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Westminster. He was episcopal ordained by George Basil Cardinal Hume , Archbishop of Westminster, on June 29, 1993. Co- consecrators were John Patrick Crowley , Bishop of Middlesbrough , and Patrick Joseph Casey , Old Bishop of Brentwood .

On June 5, 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Lancaster . The inauguration took place on July 4th of the same year. On May 1, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI. O'Donoghue's resignation due to age reasons.

Act

Patrick O'Donoghue is considered a conservative bishop. In December 2007 he published the memorandum “Fit for Mission? - Schools ". In it he called for a basic ethical and value-oriented education and pleaded u. a. for ending the liberal safe sex education in all Catholic schools in North West England and for putting a crucifix in all classrooms again . The Roman Congregation for the Clergy , in a letter from the secretary of the congregation, Archbishop Mauro Piacenza , expressly welcomed his concept “Fit for Mission? - Schools ". Archbishop Mauro Piacenza particularly welcomed the fact that Bishop O'Donoghue encouraged catechesis to be based on the catechism of the Catholic Church . The diocese of Lancaster also received inquiries from abroad (United States, Canada, Australia, France and Malta), which related to the memorandum “Fit for Mission? - Schools ”showed interest.
