Paul Baumann (politician, 1901)

Paul Baumann (born March 27, 1901 in Biebrich ; † December 17, 1976 in Mainz ) was a German politician ( KPD ) and amateur astronomer.

Life

politics

In 1933 the employee Baumann became organ director of the KPD sub-district Mainz. After the Second World War he was district chairman of the KPD in Mainz from 1945, from 1946 also a member of the state leadership of the KP Hesse-Palatinate, and in 1947 also a member of the KPD state leadership of Rhineland-Palatinate . From 1946 he was also a city councilor in Mainz and a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate Advisory State Assembly , from 1947 finally a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament and district chairman of the Communist Party of Rhine-Hesse and head of the secretariat of the South German Medical and Medical Aid (SÄS) in Mainz. In November 1947, party proceedings were initiated against Baumann because of his unexplained behavior between 1933 and 1945. Baumann thereupon placed his mandate in the state parliament on January 31, 1948 ( Fina Halein succeeded him in the state parliament ), and in March 1948 also his city council mandate and his Party functions. He then became head of the care center for the victims of fascism in Mainz. From 1949 he worked for the Rhineland-Palatinate KPD newspaper Neues Leben .

Amateur astronomy

After his political life Baumann dealt with astronomy. From his circle of friends, the Astronomical Working Group of Sternfreunde Mainz und Umgebung eV (AAG Mainz) was formed in 1961 . In 1962 he initiated the construction of the Mainz public observatory on the building of the Anne Frank School. The working group named the outdoor observatory in Klein-Winternheim after him (Paul Baumann observatory).

Werner Landgraf named the asteroid he discovered (3683) Baumann after Paul and Helene Baumann (1899–1986).
