Werner Landgraf (born July 29, 1959 in Mainz ) is a German astrophysicist .

Life

Landgraf studied physics at the University of Siegen from 1977 and ran his first astronomical projects. After completing his intermediate diploma, he moved to the University of Göttingen in 1979 and chose the field of astrophysics. He completed his diploma thesis The calculation of atmospheric models and line profiles for the analysis of star spectra in 1983; then he worked until 1988 on his dissertation Non-Gravitational Forces at Halley's Comet . (Supervisor: Hans-Heinrich Voigt )

In 1986 Landgraf received a teaching position from the University of Siegen. In addition to the main lecture on astronomy and astrophysics, mainly objects of the solar system and their movement, relativity and cosmology were dealt with.

Landgraf has lived in Cayenne , the capital of French Guiana, since 2003 . He has been partnered with his Guinean business partner under Brazilian law since December 2011 .

Landgraf's work mainly concerns the verification and determination of constants of the astronomical reference system, the masses of the planets, non-gravitational forces and the verification of the law of gravitation within the solar system. He developed and improved methods for identifying and calculating the orbits of various objects in the solar system. As part of this work, he dealt with numerous minor planets with a focus on the near-Earth minor planets, selected comets, their long-term dynamics and the observation of small planets and comets. He also developed a method for eliminating some systematic positional errors of bright comets, which allowed a more precise forecast of Halley's comet for the 1986 probe projects. A back calculation of the orbit of Halley's comet to 2317 BC. Confirmed that the Greeks had this as early as 466 BC. Had sighted.

He discovered various minor planets at the European Southern Observatory , such as B. (3683) Baumann , (4378) Voigt , named after Hans-Heinrich Voigt , (9938) Kretlow and those with the smallest elongation upon discovery, (4349) Tibúrcio .

In the years that followed, Landgraf dealt with cosmological considerations.

Honors

In 1987 the minor planet (3132) Landgraf was named after him.
