Paul Becker (meteorologist)

Paul Becker (born October 4, 1958 in Flensburg ) is a German meteorologist , President of the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG) and honorary professor at the Institute for Atmosphere and Environment of the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

Life

Becker studied meteorology at the University of Hamburg , in 1984 obtained the diploma and a doctorate in 1987. Dr. rer. nat. He worked as a research assistant at the University of Hamburg and at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology .

In 1989 Becker moved to the German Weather Service . There he initially devoted himself to operational forecasting services and product development using remote sensing data and numerical simulations . From 1996 he headed a sales department. Becker has been teaching at the University of Hamburg since 1998 . In his role as head of department , he temporarily headed the medical meteorology and climate and environmental consultancy departments from 2005 onwards, and among other things, he dealt with climate and climate impact research . 2008 joined Becker in the Executive Board of the German Weather Service and became head of the business unit climate and environment . Since 2010, Becker has also held the office of Vice President of the German Weather Service. In 2017 he accepted a teaching position at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , which appointed him an honorary professor a year later .

Becker has been President and Professor of the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy since April 1, 2019 .
