Paul Carlton Bryant (born September 22, 1933 in Asbury Park ( New Jersey ), † December 4, 2009 in Los Angeles ) was an American actor, later organist and jazz pianist , called The Central Avenue Kid .

biography

Bryant grew up in South Los Angeles; his mother had studied theater studies and was trying to start a career in Hollywood. From the age of four, Bryant had piano lessons at the John Gray Conservatory of Music , which he continued for 16 years. His artistic career began as a child star when he performed as a tap dancer , singer and pianist; In 1943 he made his debut on CBS radio. In 1942 he had his first film appearance in WS Van Dyke's comedy I Married an Angel ; this was followed by minor roles in George Marshall's Star Spangled Rhythm and Sam Woods Saratoga Trunk (1945) alongside Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman . In the 1950s and 1960s he was best known as a musician of West Coast jazz and soul jazz , stylistically strongly influenced by Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff . He presented several singles (including They Can't Take That Away from Me ) and a total of eight albums, which were released on Pacific Jazz and Fantasy Records .
