Paul De Visscher

Paul Marie Albert De Visscher (born  September 26, 1916 in Oxford , †  November 5, 1996 in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre ) was a Belgian lawyer specializing in international law . From 1947 he was professor at the Catholic University of Leuven and from 1968 at the French-speaking Université catholique de Louvain . He also worked as a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague .

Life

Paul De Visscher was born in Oxford in 1916 , as his father Charles De Visscher went to England at the beginning of the First World War and the family did not return to Belgium until the end of the war. He completed his law studies in 1940 with a doctorate at the Catholic University of Leuven, where he worked from 1943 as a lecturer and from 1947 as a full professor of public and international law, after the division of the university in 1968 at the French-speaking Université catholique de Louvain . At times he was also dean of the law faculty of the university, in 1983/1984 he headed the department for international law named after his father ( Département de droit international Charles De Visscher ). He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Hague Academy of International Law and the Permanent Court of Arbitration .

In 1954 Paul De Visscher was accepted into the Institut de Droit international , in which he, like his father and his uncle Fernand De Visscher , held the office of General Secretary from 1969 to 1981. From 1970 he was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts of Belgium . He died in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre in 1996 .
