Fernand De Visscher

Fernand Marie Emile De Visscher (born October 14, 1885 in Ghent , † December 15, 1964 in Herent ) was a Belgian legal historian and archaeologist . He worked from 1921 to 1932 as a professor of Roman law at the University of Ghent , from 1932 to 1936 at the Catholic University of Lille and from 1936 at the Catholic University of Leuven . The Société Internationale "Fernand De Visscher" pour l'Histoire des Droits de l'Antiquité (International Society "Fernand De Visscher" for Ancient Legal History) bears his name in his honor.

Life

Fernand De Visscher was born in Ghent in 1885 and studied law at the university in his hometown by 1913 , where he worked as a lecturer from 1919 and as an associate professor from 1921 and as a full professor of Roman law from 1923 . After the university switched to the Dutch language , he moved to the Catholic University of Lille in 1932 and, four years later, to the Catholic University of Leuven .

From 1946 he was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts of Belgium . In addition, from 1947 he was a corresponding member of the Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia and from 1964 a corresponding foreign member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . From 1937 to 1950 he served as general secretary of the Institut de Droit international (Institute for International Law), into which he was admitted in 1925. In this position he succeeded his brother Charles De Visscher , whose son Paul De Visscher also held this position from 1969 to 1981.

Fernand De Visscher founded the magazine " Révue Internationale des Droits de l'Antiquité " and the Société Internationale "Fernand De Visscher" pour l'Histoire des Droits de l'Antiquité (International Society "Fernand De Visscher" for ancient legal history), which he bears his name in honor. From 1945 to 1949 he worked as director of the Rome- based Academia Belgica , whose aim is the cultural and scientific exchange between Italy and Belgium . He died in Herent in 1964 .
