Pavel Demidov

Pawel Nikolajewitsch Demidow ( Russian Павел Николаевич Демидов ; born August 17, 1798 in Saint Petersburg , † April 5, 1840 in Mainz ) was a Russian officer and philanthropist.

Demidow, son of the mine operator Nikolai Nikititsch Demidow with the baroness Jelisaweta Alexandrowna Stroganowa , was educated in the Lycée Napoléon in Paris . He took part in the campaigns of the Russian army from 1812 to 1814, retired as Rittmeister in 1826 and was governor of Kursk from 1831 to 1834 .

He established a foundation for the widows and orphans of officers killed in the Turkish war with a capital of 625,000 rubles and donated half a million to the benefit of charities in Moscow and the same amount to ease the fate of those who were deported to Siberia .

He also allocated significant amounts to the Petersburg Academy of Sciences , from which it awarded the Demidow Prize annually from 1831 to 1865 (and again from 1993) . He was the father of Pawel Pavlovich Demidow (1839-1885).
