Pawel Pawlowitsch Demidow , second prince of San Donato ( Russian Павел Павлович Демидов ; born October 9, 1839 in Frankfurt am Main ; † January 26, 1885 in Vaglia , Italy ) was a Russian entrepreneur, diplomat , lawyer from the Russian noble family Demidow and philanthropist, as well as mayor of Kiev .

Life

Demidow was born as the son of Pawel Nikolajewitsch Demidow (1798-1840) and Aurora Karamzina (1808-1902) in Frankfurt am Main. He studied at the Faculty of Law at the University of St. Petersburg until 1860 and then worked in the Russian diplomatic service in Florence, Paris and Vienna, among others. He was mayor of Kiev from 1871 to 1872 and 1873 to 1874. In the Russo-Turkish War of 1877/78 Demidow was Extraordinary Plenipotentiary of the Red Cross. Demidov established a scholarship at the Medical Faculty of Kiev University , for which he paid 25,200 rubles annually. In 1883 he published his book The Jewish Question in Russia . He died in 1885 in his Villa Medici von Pratolino near Florence, acquired in 1872, and was buried in Nizhny Tagil .

In 1867 Demidow married Princess Marija Elimovna Meshcherskaya ( Мария Элимовна Мещерская ; 1844–1868) who gave birth to a son named Elim on June 25, 1868 and died the next day. In 1871 he married Princess Jelena Petrovna Trubetskaja ( Елена Петровна Трубецкая ; 1853-1917), who gave him six children, including Aurora (1873-1904), the mother of Paul of Yugoslavia .
