Paul Dibon

Paul Dibon (born November 6, 1915 in Romorantin-Lanthenay , † March 7, 1995 in Villiers-sur-Morin ) was a French historian of philosophy .

Dibon studied philosophy at the University of Paris (Sorbonne), where he was mainly influenced by Émile Bréhier . From 1948 to 1949 he was a scholarship holder at the Maison Descartes in Amsterdam , and in 1953 he became an assistant at the University of Groningen . In 1954 he received his doctorate at the University of Leiden with a dissertation on L'Enseignement philosophique aux universités néerlandaises à l'époque précartésienne (1575-1652) . He then taught as a private lecturer there and at the universities of Utrecht and Nijmegen . Since 1964 he was 'directeur d'études' at the École pratique des Hautes Études in Paris.

Dibon has mainly dealt with the history of modern philosophy and has emerged with studies on the history of Cartesianism in the interaction of French and Dutch culture. Together with Richard Popkin , he founded the series ' International Archives of the History of Ideas / Archives internationales d'Histoire des Idées ' as well as the international journal Nouvelles de la République des Lettres with other specialist colleagues . Dibon's collected papers have been published under the title Regards sur la Hollande du Siècle d'Or (Napoli: Vivarium, 1990).
