Paul Ehrenberg (painter)
Paul Ehrenberg (born August 8, 1876 in Dresden , † October 14, 1949 in Hof ) was a German painter .
Life
He was the son of the painter Carl Ehrenberg and brother of the composer Carl Ehrenberg ; the brothers, who lost their mother at an early age, grew up in the house of the state archivist Theodor Distel with his daughters Hilde and Lilly .
Ehrenberg studied at the art academies in Dresden and Munich. He was a student of Heinrich von Zügel . He was a member of the Luitpold Group and the Munich Artists' Cooperative . His work, which included numerous Impressionist portraits, still lifes, landscapes and animal portraits, was shown in exhibitions in Munich. He married the painter Lilly Teufel.
Ehrenberg was also an excellent violinist .
From 1899 to 1904 he had an intense friendship with Thomas Mann . This friendship with its unfulfilled homoeroticism occupied Thomas Mann well into old age, in whose diary Ehrenberg is referred to as the "central heart experience of my 25 years". He is the model of Rudi Schwerdtfeger in the novel Doctor Faustus .
