Paul Emmanuel Spieker

Paul Emmanuel Spieker (born October 2, 1826 in Trarbach ; † November 28, 1896 in Wiesbaden ) was a German architect and construction clerk .

Life

Spieker received his training, which he completed in 1852 with the building management examination, at the Berlin Building Academy . In 1853 he became a member of the architects' association . He completed his legal traineeship with Friedrich August Stüler and August Soller in Berlin and with Carl Boos in Wiesbaden, before taking the second state examination for government builder ( Assessor ) in 1859 and getting a job with the government in Trier . In 1864 he became a master builder in Essen, in 1867 a master builder with the government in Koblenz and in 1868 went to the building department of the Ministry of Commerce in Berlin. In 1869 he became a building inspector in the ministerial building commission, in 1873 superstructure inspector in Potsdam, in 1874 government and building advisor and in 1878 a secret councilor and lecturer in the ministry of education. On September 20, 1880 he became a member of the Academy of Civil Engineering . Further positions in the Prussian civil service hierarchy were: Director of the building construction department from October 1, 1889 to September 11, 1895, President from October 1, 1892 to September 11, 1895, Senior Building Director from November 9, 1891. In 1895 he joined the premature division for health reasons Retired and moved to Wiesbaden, where he died in 1896.

Stylistically, Spieker was a representative of the late Schinkel School and is best known for his buildings for science.

• 1868–1872: Plötzensee prison , Berlin (design jointly with Heinrich Herrmann , construction management jointly with Otto Lorenz )
• 1871–1873: Building of the Normal-Aichungskommission on the grounds of the Lindenstrasse observatory, Berlin (no longer available)
• 1871–1874: University library (later the Art History Institute) of the Friedrich Wilhelm University at Dorotheenstrasse  9 (today 28) in Berlin (construction management Fritz Zastrau )
• 1873–1877: Physiological Institute, Dorotheenstrasse 35, Berlin (site management F. Zastrau / Kleinwächter; today: Dorotheenstrasse 96, Robert Koch Forum )
• 1873–1878: Physikalisches Institut, Reichstagufer 7/8, Berlin (construction management F. Zastrau / Moritz Hellwig; badly destroyed in World War II)
• 1879: New memorial to commemorate the Battle of Fehrbellin , on the Kurfürstenhügel near Hakenberg (inaugurated on Sedan Day 1879)
• 1874: Park and buildings on Telegrafenberg in Potsdam
• 1876–1893: Institute buildings and observatory for astronomical-geodetic angle measurements ( Helmert Tower ) at the Royal Prussian Geodetic Institute on Telegrafenberg in Potsdam
• 1877/78: Reconstruction of the Maria Magdalenen Church in Templin
• 1879–1883: Pharmacological Institute, Dorotheenstrasse 34A, Berlin (site manager F. Zastrau / Kleinwächter)
• From 1885: Dept. I of the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt , Abbestraße, Berlin-Charlottenburg (design and construction together with Carl Ferdinand Busse and construction management of the entire complex)
• 1888–1889: Urania building with public observatory (only the former lecture hall is preserved), Invalidenstrasse 58, Berlin
