The Telegrafenberg (older spelling Telegraphenberg ) is a 94 meter high elevation in the south-west of Potsdam , which belongs to the Saarmunder terminal moraine arch. Several observatories were built on the mountain in the 19th century ; today the Albert Einstein Science Park and other research facilities are located there . According to Hans Joachim Schellnhuber , the former director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research located there , it is "the most beautiful science campus on the continent".
history
The Telegrafenberg, which was previously called Hinterer Brauhausberg, was given its name in 1832 because of the optical telegraph station that was built there at the time (a 6 m high mast that passed on combinations of characters by means of pairs of wings). Friedrich Wilhelm III. had the Prussian state telegram line set up between Berlin and Koblenz that year in order to be able to exchange messages as quickly as possible between the Rhine Province and the Prussian heartland . The 4th mast of 62 stations on the almost 550 km long route was on the Telegrafenberg. In 1849 the line was discontinued after the introduction of electric telegraphy .
science
Since then, numerous scientific institutes and facilities have been founded, which together form the Albert Einstein Science Park , named after Albert Einstein , who also conducted research there in the 1920s.
