Paul Glahn

Paul Glahn (born May 3, 1934 in Münster , Westphalia ) is a German opera singer (bass).

Life

Glahn began his career in the choir of the Stendal Cathedral Choir ( St. Nikolaus ); He sang there from 1950 to 1956. He received his vocal training from Fritz Polster in Leipzig . From 1956 to 1959 he was first engaged as a choir singer at the Leipzig Opera House , later as a soloist in the bass vocal subject . He remained a permanent member of the ensemble at the Leipzig Opera House throughout his stage career.

Glahn made his debut at the Leipzig Opera in 1959 with the role of Ossip in the opera Der Revisor by Werner Egk . Glahn sang a broad repertoire in Leipzig; he interpreted roles in the role of "Seriöser Bass" as well as numerous bass buffo roles. He was particularly known as a Mozart interpreter. He sang u. a. the Mozart roles Leporello in Don Giovanni , Figaro in Figaro's wedding and Papageno in Die Zauberflöte . Towards the end of his career he also sang many smaller parts. In the 1989/90 season he sang the high priest of Baal in Nabucco at the Leipzig Opera House . In the 1991/92 season he took on the role of joke in the Leipzig premiere of the opera Le Grand Macabre at the Leipzig Opera House . In May 1993 he sang the small part of the 2nd Knight of the Grail in two concert performances of Parsifal under Marek Janowski as part of the Leipziger Festwochen .

As a member of the Leipzig Opera House, he made guest appearances mainly in the socialist states, a. a. in the Soviet Union , Poland and Cuba , but also in France , Great Britain and Spain . In addition to his operatic career, he also worked extensively as a concert singer.

He made several records. He sang for the GDR record label Eterna u. a. Wagner in a complete recording by Margarethe (1973), second shadow in The Condemnation of Lucullus by Paul Dessau (1966), landlord in Der Mond (1973) and the third elder in Moses and Aron (1978).
