Paul Hassel

Johann Otto Paul Hassel (born July 22, 1838 in Berlin , † July 31, 1906 in Jena ) was a German historian and archivist .

Life

After attending grammar school, he first studied medicine and natural sciences, and later history at the universities of Giessen and Berlin , where he also received his doctorate in 1862 . In 1866 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer at the University of Berlin. As a reporter for the "Prussian Gazette" he took part in the Franco-German War at the headquarters of the Crown Prince of Prussia .

In 1872 he began his archival activities at the Secret Ministerial Archives, before moving to the Secret State Archives in Berlin in 1874 . From 1882 until his death in 1906 he was director of the Royal Saxon Main State Archives in Dresden. In addition to the publication of a number of historical writings, he worked as editor of the magazine for Prussian history and regional studies (1867-1870). After being reburied, he found his final resting place in the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf .
