Paul Hatry

Paul Hatry (born October 29, 1929 in Frankfurt am Main ; † August 16, 2010 ) was a Belgian university professor and politician of the Mouvement Réformateur (MR). Hatry, a former professor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), who was considered an expert on energy issues and was Honorary Chairman of the Belgian Oil Extraction Association, was a long member of the Senate and held the posts of Finance Minister and later Minister of the Brussels Region in the 1980s inside. At the local level, he was a member of the Brussels Municipal Council until 2000 .

Life

Paul Hatry studied economics at the Solvay Business School (SBS) in Brussels and at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and graduated in 1952. He then spent three years within the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC) (predecessor of OECD ).

On his return to Belgium he got a position at the Center d'Etudes Paul Hymans, the study center of the Liberal Party at the time (predecessor of today's MR) (1956 to 1961). From there he made the leap as a consultant in the cabinet of the Minister for Economic Affairs and the Minister-Under-Secretary of State for Energy (1958 to 1961). This enabled him to direct the fortunes of the Fédération pétrolière belge (Belgian oil production association) as managing administrator and general manager from 1961 to 1988 and to steer it through the oil crises of the 1970s. At the same time, Hatry also took management positions in numerous other international corporations. In his capacity as an expert on energy issues, he was a member of the European Economic and Social Committee (EMS) from 1978 to 1982, where he was Chairman of the Energy and Atomic Energy Committee and Chairman of the Energy Policy Office of the Union of Industrial and Employers' Confederation of Europe (UNICE ) (Predecessor of Businesseurope ).

In addition, Hatry was from 1958 to 1995, the year of his retirement , lecturer and professor for applied sciences at the SBS and the ULB.

He got into politics in 1980, when he replaced Robert Henrion ( PRL ), who had resigned for health reasons, as finance minister in the short-lived Martens III government under Wilfried Martens ( CVP ). From 1983 to 1985 he was Minister of the Brussels Region in the Martens V government . In 1981 he was elected to the Senate , where he chaired various committees (such as the Committee on Financial and Economic Affairs from 1995 to 1999), and was able to hold this office continuously until 1999.

At the local level, Hatry was a member of the Brussels Municipal Council until 2000 .

Until his death on August 16, 2010, Paul Hatry was still an advisor to the Belgian Finance Minister Didier Reynders (MR).

Honors

Paul Hatry has received numerous honors. He was Grand Cross of the Belgian Order of Leopold II and of the Order of the Crown and Grand Officer of the Order of Leopold . He was also the recipient of international awards, such as (selection) Grand Cross of the German Federal Cross of Merit and the Great Silver Medal of Honor on Ribbon for Services to the Republic of Austria , Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the Brazilian Order of the Southern Cross , Commander of the French Legion of Honor and the Dutch Order of Orange-Nassau as well as numerous orders from other European and South American countries.

Paul Hatry was also Honorary Consul of Colombia in Brussels.
