Paul Hayes Tucker (born July 7, 1950 in New York City ) is an American art historian and curator . His specialty is French impressionism , especially the work of Claude Monet .

Life

Paul Hayes Tucker first studied art history at Williams College in Williamstown (Massachusetts) . During this time he also went on a study trip to Florence . While studying in Williamstown, he saw original works by Claude Monet at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute there , which had a lasting impact on him. For further studies he then moved to Yale University in New Haven (Connecticut) , where he received his doctorate in 1979 under Robert L. Herbert . In his dissertation he dealt with Claude Monet's stay in Argenteuil . Since 1978 he has taught art history at the University of Massachusetts in Boston . He published numerous essays on Claude Monet and wrote a number of books. In addition, he has repeatedly worked as an exhibition curator. These include the exhibitions Monet in the '90s: the series paintings from 1990 and Monet in the 20th century from 1998, which were shown at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the exhibition The Impressionists at Argenteuil , which was shown in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC in 2000 , or various exhibitions that took place in Japanese museums. In addition to French impressionist artists, Tucker also devoted himself to 20th century artists such as David Smith and Kenneth Noland . He also founded the sculpture project Arts on the Point , through which works by contemporary sculptors were placed on the grounds of the University of Massachusetts. In 2014, Tucker left the University of Massachusetts and retired. The Paul Hayes Tucker Distinguished Professor of Art , named after him, was created there in his honor . His son is the actor Jonathan Tucker .
