Paul Herget

Paul Herget (born January 30, 1908 in Cincinnati , Ohio , † August 27, 1981 there ) was an American astronomer .

Life

He taught astronomy at the University of Cincinnati in the US state of Ohio . In 1947 he initiated the establishment of the Minor Planet Center there , which he managed until his retirement in 1978. After the war, he was appointed director of the Cincinnati Observatory .

He was a pioneer in the use of calculating machines to solve scientific and astronomical problems (e.g., calculating ephemeris for asteroids). During World War II , he used these skills to track down enemy submarines using spherical trigonometry methods .

Paul Herget has a daughter Marilyn, after whom the asteroid (1486) was named Marilyn .

Honors

In 1962 Herget was elected to the National Academy of Sciences . The asteroid (1751) Herget was named after him.
