Paul Hugh Emmett

Paul Hugh Emmett (born September 22, 1900 in Portland (Oregon) , † April 22, 1985 ) was an American physical chemist . His main research interests were surface physics and catalysis research . He was a student friend of Linus Pauling and married Pauling's sister Pauline for the third time in 1976.

After completing his BA at Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University ), Paul Emmett moved to the California Institute of Technology , where he received his PhD in 1925 under Arthur Ferguson Benton . In 1937 he became a member of the Chemical Engineering Department at Johns Hopkins University . In 1943 he left this university and joined the Manhattan project in the field of isotope separation (separation of 235 U and 238 U). After completing this work, he moved to the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research and finally, in 1955, back to Johns Hopkins University. That year he also became a member of the National Academy of Sciences . After his retirement in 1971 he received a research professorship from Portland State University , which he held until his death.

In 1958 he received the Kendall Award from the American Chemical Society . The North American Catalysis Society (NACS) has presented the Paul H. Emmett Award in Fundamental Catalysis since 1971 .

His work spanned a wide range of physical chemistry, particularly research into the mechanisms of catalysis and isotope research . Together with Stephen Brunauer and Edward Teller , he developed the BET measurement for determining the size of surfaces using gas adsorption.
