Paul Karp

Paul Karp (* April 18 . Jul / 1. May  1905 greg. On the estate Adila, then community Hageri , today rural community Kohila , Rapla County , Estonia ; †  7. December 1981 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian conductor and trombonist .

Life and music

Paul Karp completed his studies in trombone with Raimund Kull in 1931 and in composition with Artur Kapp at the Tallinn Conservatory in 1933 . From 1935 Karp himself taught trombone and tuba at the conservatory, from 1968 with the title of professor.

From 1922 to 1927 Karp played in various Estonian military orchestras. He then became a professional musician. Until 1941 he was engaged as a trombonist in the Estonia Theater and Concert Hall in Tallinn. During the Soviet occupation of Estonia, Karp co-founded the State Philharmonic of the Estonian SSR ( Estonian ENSV Riiklik Filharmoonia ) and became its artistic director and director.

From 1941 to 1944 Karp was a conductor with the Estonian Radio Orchestra. From 1944 to 1950 he was chief conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Eesti Raadio .

In 1965 Paul Karp was awarded the title of Honored Artist by the Estonian SSR.
